Biowrap - Get wrapped in the environment

Consumer

What’s wrong with traditional plastic?

  • Contaminate compost
  • Destroying environmental aesthetics if littered
  • Placing animals in danger of entanglement and starvation from ingestion
  • Contributing to greenhouse gases if combusted

Does the finished product need to be stored or handled in any special way?
A degree of care is sensible so as to ensure that the products are not exposed to excessive heat, light or stress. For example, degradable plastics should be stored in a cool/shaded place rather than in the open air or in a hot, sunny area.

What if the plastic wrapping doesn't end up in landfill?
Even if the plastic wrapping is discarded by less civic minded or environmentally conscious people, their exposure to open air, sunlight and wind will mean that they will also degrade - minimising pollution and physical harm to wildlife.

How long does it take biowrap* to degrade?
It depends on the type of landfill or waste disposal it ends up in. There is a first stage process whereby the bad becomes brittle and fragments in to smaller pieces. The speed at which this occurs will depend on the availability of UV light, oxygen, heat and physical stress - all of which can contribute to a speedier chemical transformation in the landfill environment.

Does biowrap* have a shelf life?
We recommend that the plastic wrapping be used within 18 - 24 months from the date of manufacture.
